The book of Judges records the turbulent chapter in Israel’s history following Joshua’s death and before the rise of Israel's kings. God’s people had settled in the land He had promised, yet their hearts still wandered. Again and again, they forgot the Lord and chased after false gods. Their unfaithfulness led to oppression by surrounding nations. In their distress, they cried out for deliverance, and God raised up judges to rescue them and call His people back to covenant faithfulness. Who were these leaders? You may have heard of Gideon, Deborah, and Samson, but their stories each play a part in a well-ordered narrative with one big message.
The book of Judges reminds us of God’s steadfast faithfulness to His forgetful people and leaves us aching for a true and better Deliverer—Jesus Christ.
