Road Trippin' with Jesus
In Mark Chapters 9 & 10, we see an account of Jesus's journey from Galilee to Jerusalem. The passage confronts the disciples' incomplete understanding of Jesus's mission as they travel toward Jerusalem. By sandwiching the narrative between two separate healings of blind men (the first healed progressively and the second healed immediately), Mark hints at the need to progress from partial to complete understanding of the path of discipleship.
Three of the core principles of this path of discipleship are humility (knowing our proper status before God), denial of worldly values (willingly sacrificing power and possessions), and acceptance of suffering (recognizing hardship as part of the journey).
Key Points:
- The Transfiguration occurring near the beginning of this account, provides a glimpse of Jesus's future glory, the hope of all disciples, then and now
- God's voice at the Transfiguration ("This is my beloved son, listen to him") emphasized Jesus's authority over the Law and the Prophets
- Humility is essential to discipleship—followers must have childlike faith and serve rather than seeking greatness
- Disciples must deny worldly values, including attachment to power, possessions, and status
- Suffering is an integral part of the Christian journey, not a sign of lack of faith
Application: Jesus calls us to the challenges of humility, suffering and sacrifice, not to deprive us of pleasure, but to prepare us for infinite joy in eternal life. The Christian life is a journey toward a destination, not the destination itself.
