1 John 1:1-4
As we begin our series on the book of 1 John we must take note of the unique perspective John provides as a close friend and disciple of Jesus and understand how his passionate nature, his role as the "apostle of love," and his firsthand experiences with Christ shape our understanding of his writings; particularly 1 John, which presents Jesus as both fully God and fully man. This understanding of the dual-nature of Christ is crucial for our salvation and relationship with God. While the Gospel of John clearly outlines Christ as God, the Book of 1 John describes Christ as man.
Key Points:
- John was part of Jesus' inner circle and identifies himself as "the disciple whom Jesus loved"
- John's writings (Gospel of John, Revelation, and 1 John) all begin with powerful portrayals of Christ
- 1 John emphasizes Jesus' humanity while affirming His divinity
Three major themes in 1 John: sound doctrine (truth), obedience, and love
