The Real Thing

Ephesians 2:1-10 is one of the most straightforward, powerful presentations of God's plan of salvation. Paul calls all believers to remember who they were: spiritually dead— walking without purpose—enslaved by the world system, Satan, and their own sinful nature apart from God. And then reminds them who they now are because of God, who in His rich mercy, makes all believers alive with Christ, raises them up, and seats them in heavenly places. This merits a response of joyfully engaging in the works that God has prepared for us to do.

Key Points:

- The human condition apart from Christ is worse than we think—we are spiritually dead, not just sick or struggling

- Humanity was created to glorify God and display His image; failure to do so invites God's righteous wrath

- God's salvation is better than we imagine—He makes us alive, raises us up, and seats us with Christ in heavenly places

- The purpose of salvation is to display God's immeasurable riches of grace for all eternity

- Grace is "unconditioned" (not earned) but not "unconditional" (requires a response)

Application: The primary work of believers is making disciples of all nations. God's sovereignty in salvation gives hope to evangelism. Let us pray for gospel opportunities, the awareness to see them when God sends them, and the courage and conviction to share the truth boldly.
