Husbands and Wives

In Ephesians 5:21-33, Paul calls for mutual submission among all believers, in reverence to Christ. He then unpacks this by specifically addressing God's design for marriage. Christian marriages are grounded in mutual submission, with wives voluntarily ordering themselves under their husband's leadership, and husbands sacrificially loving their wives as Christ loved the church. Rather than promoting worldly authority structures, Paul presents a counter-cultural vision where headship means servant leadership that is focused on sanctification, not domination. Marriage becomes a battleground for spiritual warfare and a primary means through which God is redeeming creation from the curse of Genesis 3, restoring broken relationships to their original divine intent.
