The Changed Life
Ephesians 4:17-5:2 expands on Paul's instruction (from 4:1) to "walk in a manner worthy" with examples of what our new life in Christ should look like. Believers are called to "put off" their old, sinful selves, and "put on" a "new self" made in the image of Christ. This transformation isn't achieved through self-effort but through yielding to the Holy Spirit's power while consistently renewing our minds through God's Word.
Key Points:
- God saves us not just for security but for transformation and growth in holiness
- Believers must "walk worthy" of their calling, reflecting the gospel in daily conduct
- The old self has been put off; the new self must be put on through continual renewal of the mind
- Regular exposure to God's Word is essential to counter the world's constant bombardment of contrary messages
- Holiness and righteousness are good gifts, not burdens that steal joy
Application: As believers, we must move beyond simply knowing our position in Christ to actually walking in a manner worthy of our calling. As followers of Christ, we should never simply settle for how we were or are, but rather steadily seek to grow in our representation of Christ.
