People of the Word

In Jonah 3:1–5, we see that God’s Word comes to Jonah a second time with the same command: go to Nineveh and proclaim God’s message. Jonah’s story reminds us that the Word of the Lord is consistent, authoritative, and demands a response. God’s plans are not thwarted by disobedience, ignorance, or failure; His Word accomplishes what He purposes.

Jonah’s brief message to Nineveh shows that God’s Word - not human skill or persuasion - is what brings repentance. The people of Nineveh respond by believing God, fasting, and humbling themselves. Their example challenges us to take God’s word seriously, submit our lives to its authority, and repent where it confronts our sin.

Application: As followers of Christ, we are called to be people of the Word: trusting Scripture over our feelings, culture, or assumptions, and proclaiming God’s truth with urgency and humility. Since Jesus is the Word made flesh, our hope rests in Him and in the salvation He brings.
